Is cash on delivery (COD) safe for online clothing in India?
Cash on delivery is generally safe in India when ordering from established online stores using verified courier networks. The main protections are inspecting the package on delivery (where allowed), buying from brands with clear return policies, and using couriers that offer tracking and customer support. Prepaid is usually faster to ship and is often discounted, but COD remains a valid option.
How COD works in India
You place the order without paying online. The courier delivers the package and collects payment at the door, usually in cash or sometimes by UPI on delivery. The brand receives the payment after the courier remits it, which can take a few days.
For the customer, the main appeal is no upfront payment and the option to reject the package if something looks visibly wrong.
What to check before ordering COD
Look for a clear return and refund policy on the brand's site. If returns are accepted and the brand has a customer support channel that actually responds, COD is low risk.
Check which courier the brand uses. Major Indian courier networks with tracking and dispute resolution will generally let you raise a complaint if something goes wrong on the way.
On the doorstep
Some couriers allow you to inspect the package before paying; many do not. Brand policy varies. Check the brand's FAQ to know what is allowed. Even where inspection is not allowed at delivery, you typically still have return rights once you unbox.
If the package is visibly damaged or tampered with, you can refuse delivery without paying. The package goes back to the brand and you do not owe anything.
Why prepaid is often preferred
Prepaid orders are usually dispatched faster because the brand does not need to factor in COD verification. Many brands also offer a small discount on prepaid orders to offset the COD handling fee they pay couriers.
If you are confident about the brand and the product, prepaid is usually the smoother option. COD is a good safety net for first-time orders or higher-value purchases where you want the inspection step.
